I would like to know if it is at all possible to make use of an absolute path (images is located on a different server) as you root path instead of the normal relative path?

In theory yes, but I don't think you could do that with AdmirorGallery. What you could do, maybe, is to fake the image list and see if GD+ is capable of creating thumbs from remote images.

All in all, this would require some diving into the code, and if you have the time and will to try, let me know the result
